Governor Kelly Armstrong announced on April 6 the opening of the application period for school, community, and church bands, orchestras, and choirs in North Dakota to apply for the Governor’s Official State Band/Orchestra Program and Choral Program for the 2026-2027 school year.

The announcement is significant as it offers musical groups across the state an opportunity to be recognized at a statewide level. Selected groups may have the chance to perform at official state functions, highlighting their achievements and involvement in their communities.

According to Armstrong’s office, “The Governor and First Lady will select the two groups from the applications received based on musical talent, achievement and community involvement.” The chosen ensembles may be invited to perform at various events throughout the school year, including the State of the State Address scheduled for January 2027 at the Capitol in Bismarck.

Groups interested in applying are required to submit an application along with a musical recording to the Governor’s Office by 5 p.m. on Monday, May 4. The winners of both programs will be announced later in May. Application materials can be submitted through the official website.

This initiative provides visibility for local music organizations while fostering participation from diverse communities throughout North Dakota. It also underscores support from state leadership for arts education and public performance opportunities.
