Every year, approximately 200,000 individuals transition from U.S. military service to civilian life. In response to this, a bipartisan group of senators has introduced the Servicemember to Veteran Health Care Connection Act. The legislation is spearheaded by U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), alongside Senators Angus King (I-ME), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), and Mike Rounds (R-SD).
The proposed bill aims to formalize and enhance the existing pre-transition health care registration process managed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This initiative seeks to provide timely access to mental and physical health care for service members as they transition out of active duty.
Senator Cramer emphasized the importance of this measure, stating: “As service members in North Dakota and across the U.S. return to civilian life, we must ensure they have access to critical health care services and resources before a time of crisis.” He highlighted that the legislation would enable the VA to connect with transitioning service members more effectively.
Senator King echoed these sentiments, saying: “Our servicemembers continually put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms and they deserve the very best care and support long after they retire the uniform.” He described the act as a straightforward approach to ensuring veterans can easily access their entitled health benefits.
Senator Duckworth underscored America’s obligation towards its veterans: “Veterans represent the best of our country… we have a responsibility to fulfill our commitment to them once their service is complete.” She pointed out that many face potential gaps in care during their transition from military life.
The legislation would allow for early enrollment in VA health programs, thereby preventing any lapse in healthcare services for newly-separated veterans.
