The City of Bismarck announced on May 7 that it will host a public information meeting from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on May 14 at Bismarck Public Works, located at 601 S. 26th Street, to discuss the proposed extension of the city’s half-cent sales tax dedicated to road construction.

The purpose of the meeting is to inform residents about a home rule charter amendment that would extend the current half-cent sales tax for roadway construction and adopt an updated list of eligible projects. The updated project list would include arterial roadways as well as select collector and local roadways. If approved by voters, the sales tax would be extended until December 31, 2038, with a vote scheduled during the June 9, 2026 primary election.

Presentations are planned for 4 p.m., 5 p.m., and 6 p.m., with an open house format available between presentations. According to city officials, “The Public Information Meeting will allow community members an opportunity to receive information on the home rule charter amendment and ask any questions.” The current sales tax was originally approved by voters in 2018 with a ten-year sunset provision set to expire in 2029.

Revenue from this sales tax has supported several major road projects when combined with federal and state funding. These include E Century Avenue (2025), S Washington Street (2024), Ash Coulee Drive (2023), two phases of work on 43rd Avenue NE (2020 & 2022), and Tyler Parkway (2022). Additional details about the proposed amendment can be found through resources such as the Bismarck Streets page provided by city officials.

Accessibility accommodations are being offered for those attending or seeking information about city programs. Requests can be made for accessible facilities or other accommodations for people with disabilities, language interpretation services for individuals with limited English proficiency, or translations of written materials needed to access city programs and information.
