Washington, D.C. – The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed the Miracle on Ice Congressional Gold Medal Act with bipartisan support. This legislation, cosponsored by Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak (R-ND), aims to recognize the 1980 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team for their historic victory against the Soviet Union, by awarding them the Congressional Gold Medal.
“The 1980 U.S. Men’s Hockey Team captured the hearts of our nation and the world with their underdog victory at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics. They showed the world what American resilience looks like, and it’s only fitting that we honor them with one of our nation’s highest civilian awards,” expressed Fedorchak. “I’m especially proud of the role our state played in this incredible story. I was just a kid at the time, but I distinctly remember watching this game and being amazed by the heart of these players and filled with pride by their victory.”
North Dakotans were instrumental in this historic achievement. Notably, Dave Christian, a former collegiate hockey player at the University of North Dakota, was a key member of the “Miracle on Ice” team. Christian is among 30 men’s hockey players from UND who have competed in the Winter Olympics, with half representing the United States. Additionally, the University of North Dakota has seen success in women’s hockey, with Grand Forks natives Monique Lamoureux-Morando and Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson earning gold medals.
The Congressional Gold Medal is a prestigious civilian distinction given by Congress to individuals and groups whose contributions have significantly influenced American history and culture.
