The Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee convened today to review Doug Collins’ nomination as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). If confirmed, Collins will lead efforts to provide healthcare and benefits to millions of veterans.

U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer, who served alongside Collins in the House for six years, introduced him at the hearing. Cramer described Collins as a “former colleague, friend, Navy veteran, military chaplain, and accomplished attorney.”

Cramer emphasized that the current administration prioritizes veterans over bureaucracy. He expressed his support for Collins by stating, “The service providers are important, but the most important person is the veteran, and that’s who Doug Collins will look out for.”

During the hearing, Cramer asked if Collins would consider overturning an illegal rule from the Biden administration regarding VA procedures on abortions. In response, Collins indicated his intent to examine any such rules closely.

Collins also addressed issues with the Community Care program which provides veterans access to local care facilities. The program faces bureaucratic hurdles that limit its effectiveness. Cramer urged collaboration to improve this system so veterans can access necessary care within their communities.

Collins affirmed his commitment to veterans’ welfare: “It’s my intention to work with my colleagues to further clarify in the Mission Act what you know, what access to community care is.” He stressed finding solutions rather than focusing on technicalities.

Collins concluded by highlighting his dedication: “For me, this is about the veterans. This is about getting them the access to care that you and I and many on this committee voted for.”
