A ceremony is scheduled for November 4 in Bismarck to honor the service of Private Franklin Joseph DuFrame, a World War II hero. The event will include the presentation of a replacement Purple Heart medal to his son, Donald Franklin DuFrame, who also served in the military during the Vietnam War.
U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer will present the Purple Heart to the family of Pvt. DuFrame, recognizing his sacrifice and service. This medal replaces an earlier one that was lost. Additionally, Senator Cramer will present a flag flown over the United States Capitol in Pvt. DuFrame’s honor.
The ceremony will also feature the awarding of a Vietnam Commemorative Pin to Donald DuFrame and a Quilt of Valor from Missouri River Quilts of Valor members.
Purple Heart medals are awarded to military personnel wounded or killed due to enemy action and are considered the oldest military honor still given today, established by President George Washington in 1782.
“This Purple Heart medal is much more than an award; it’s really a symbol of our nation’s eternal gratitude for Franklin DuFrame’s bravery, and heroism, and sacrifice,” said Cramer. “Private DuFrame gave his life for our country, and it’s really an honor for me to be able to present his family with this replacement medal to recognize his valiant service.”
Born in August 1920 in Maine, Pvt. DuFrame served with C Company, 10th Infantry Battalion, 4th Armored Division in the U.S. Army. He was married to Elma Leona Helman DuFrame and had three children. On March 24, 1945, he was wounded in Germany and died two days later at age 24.
The public ceremony will take place at AMVETS Post #9 at 6:30 p.m., located at 2402 Railroad Ave., Bismarck.
