Fargo North Law and Justice students visited the Supreme Court on April 15, accompanied by their teacher Melissa Evensen. This marks the second group that Evensen has brought to observe an oral argument at the Supreme Court this year.
The visit aimed to give students firsthand exposure to state government operations and judicial proceedings. Such opportunities allow students to understand how laws are interpreted and applied, as well as the responsibilities of various public officials.
During their time at the capitol, students met with Secretary of State Michael Howe, Christopher Joseph—General Counsel to Governor Armstrong—and Justices Douglas Bahr and Mark Friese. After individual meetings, they had lunch on the 18th floor of the capitol building, listened to oral arguments in court, and briefly toured the House chamber.
Secretary Howe spoke with students about voting rights, election security measures, and his office’s wide range of duties. Joseph described his position as General Counsel for Governor Kelly Armstrong and discussed his work within the governor’s office. Justices Bahr and Friese explained how decisions are developed for cases before the court.
The class concluded their visit by posing for a photograph with Justices Mark Friese (centered left) and Douglas Bahr (centered right).
