The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has allocated nearly $6 million in federal funding for two projects aimed at flood mitigation and storm shelter construction in North Dakota.
A total of $3,122,738 will be used for Phase II of the Boom Lake flood mitigation project in Marion. This phase will focus on construction to address ongoing flooding risks. The work will include final construction engineering to protect critical infrastructure such as a sanitary sewer lift station and nearby buildings. It also aims to reduce dependence on emergency levees, enhance community resilience, safeguard infrastructure, and provide long-term flood risk reduction.
An additional $2,862,000 has been designated for the design and construction of four storm shelters in state parks. These shelters are planned to withstand windspeeds up to 250 mph (EF-5).
