The North Dakota Department of Transportation announced on April 10 that construction will begin Monday, April 13, on the northbound lanes of Interstate 29 at Hillsboro. The work is scheduled to finish in the fall.
The project will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction using the southbound lanes from mile marker 101 to 111. This stretch runs about three miles south of Hillsboro to just north of the Mayville/ND Highway 200 interchange. The speed limit through this area will be lowered to 65 miles per hour, and vehicles wider than twelve feet will not be allowed. Starting in July, overpasses at both Hillsboro and the Mayville exit will also have single-lane traffic controlled by signals.
According to the official website, the North Dakota Department of Transportation manages eight district offices across the state for roadway maintenance, construction oversight, and administrative services (official website). The department’s responsibilities include vehicle registration, driver licensing, and maintaining more than 8,500 miles of roadways along with nearly 4,900 bridges (official website).
The department aims to facilitate safe transport for people and goods while advancing quality service and economic progress throughout North Dakota (official website). Executive leadership includes a director as well as deputy directors who oversee engineering, administration, planning, and driver services (official website).
“The North Dakota Department of Transportation would like to remind motorists to slow down and use caution throughout the work zone,” said agency officials in their statement.
