District Court Judge Marina Spahr visited Sunrise Elementary School in Bismarck on April 15, meeting with fifth grade students to talk about the North Dakota Court System and the role of judges. The visit was organized after an invitation from Mrs. Jennifer Erp.
Spahr spoke to more than 80 students about how the court system operates, what district judges and justices do, and what qualifications are needed to become a judge. She also discussed the importance of jury duty within the legal process.
Students had the opportunity to ask questions about becoming an attorney and learning more about a judge’s daily work. During her presentation, Spahr explained how each branch of government functions and interacts with one another.
The visit concluded with a mock trial activity led by Spahr, where selected students participated as members of a courtroom. One student acted as judge in deciding a fictional case involving a missing cell phone.
Spahr also described skills that are helpful for attorneys and judges, offering advice for those interested in pursuing careers in law.
