North Central Judicial District Judge Todd L. Cresap announced on May 12 that he will retire from his position effective July 17, 2026.
Cresap’s retirement marks the end of a long career serving the North Central and Northwest Districts in North Dakota. In a letter to Governor Kelly Armstrong, Cresap said, “It has truly been my honor to have served both the people of the Northwest District as well as those of the North Central District”.
Cresap was appointed as District Court Judge for Judgeship No. 5 in Minot by Governor John Hoeven in 2009. He was later elected to the position in 2012 and re-elected in both 2016 and 2022.
A native of Valley City born in 1961, Cresap earned his bachelor’s degree from Minot State University in 1983 and his Juris Doctor from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1986. He was admitted to practice law in North Dakota on September 26, 1986.
Before joining the bench, Cresap practiced law privately for more than twenty years in Minot until his judicial appointment.
The letter announcing his retirement was addressed to Governor Armstrong.
