Over the past four years, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has faced challenges in maintaining its focus on key priorities such as quality local healthcare options, timely access, and accountability.
President Trump has nominated Doug Collins for the position of VA Secretary. Collins, who served alongside U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer in the House of Representatives for six years, is described by Cramer as a “former colleague, friend, Navy veteran, military chaplain, and accomplished attorney.” Cramer expressed confidence that Collins will prioritize veterans’ needs above all else.
In an op-ed published in the Washington Examiner on January 22, 2024, Cramer outlined his support for Collins’ nomination. He emphasized that voters have shown a desire for leaders who focus on American greatness and serve those who elected them. According to Cramer, Doug Collins embodies these qualities and is well-equipped to lead the VA.
Cramer highlighted legislative efforts like the VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act of 2017 and the VA MISSION Act of 2018 as crucial reforms that need proper implementation. These laws were designed to improve accountability within the VA and provide veterans with more healthcare options.
However, under previous leadership, there were issues with enforcing these reforms effectively. For instance, many VA employees dismissed for misconduct were reinstated during President Joe Biden’s administration. Additionally, references to healthcare options under the MISSION Act were reportedly obscured on official platforms.
Cramer also pointed out financial management issues within the department. Last summer’s $15 billion budget shortfall caused anxiety among veterans due to a lack of clear communication from the VA.
Doug Collins’ background as a Navy veteran and Air Force reservist is seen as beneficial for understanding veterans’ needs. His experience as a military chaplain positions him uniquely to foster a culture of caring public service at the VA.
Collins’ familiarity with legislative intent from his time in Congress adds to his qualifications for leading this large agency. Cramer believes that with Collins at the helm, there is an opportunity to address what he describes as an “incompetent and rogue department.”
The expectation is that Collins will steer the VA towards its core mission: serving veterans rather than perpetuating bureaucratic inefficiencies.
