In February 1980, the United States Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team made history by defeating the Soviet Union in a match that became known as the “Miracle on Ice.” The U.S. team, composed of 20 amateur collegiate players, achieved a stunning victory against the four-time Olympic champions during a period marked by economic and political challenges in the United States.
To commemorate the 45th anniversary of this significant event, U.S. Senators Kevin Cramer (R-ND) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have introduced the Miracle on Ice Congressional Gold Medal Act. This legislation aims to award three Congressional Gold Medals to members of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team for their remarkable accomplishment at the Winter Olympic Games held in Lake Placid, New York. Congressman Pete Stauber (R-MN-08) has introduced a companion measure in the House of Representatives.
The medals will be displayed at notable locations: the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum in Colorado, the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in Minnesota, and the Lake Placid Olympic Center in New York.
Senator Cramer remarked on the significance of this event: “Not only is the ‘Miracle on Ice’ game a symbol of great teamwork and determination, but it really symbolizes the unity of our nation at the height of the Cold War, at a time when we really needed unity.”
Senator Schumer highlighted its historical impact: “In one of the greatest sports moments in American history…the U.S. Team demonstrated great American fighting spirit…that propelled them to a miraculous victory over the Soviet Red Army juggernaut.” He emphasized that this moment continues to inspire pride across generations.
Congressman Stauber also expressed his commitment to honoring this achievement: “Coach Herb Brooks and his team…accomplished the impossible and made us all believe in miracles…As we rapidly approach the 45th anniversary…it is a high priority of mine to get this passed.”
Additional cosponsors include several senators such as Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), alongside representatives like Mike Quigley (D-IL-05).
Pat Kelleher from USA Hockey endorsed this recognition: “The 1980 U.S. Olympic Men’s Hockey Team is most deserving of receiving…the Congressional Gold Medal.”
