North Dakota State University Extension announced on May 19 that it will hold the Junior Beef Producers Workshop on June 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carrington Research Extension Center in Carrington, North Dakota.
The workshop is designed for youth ages 10 to 16 and aims to provide hands-on learning about the beef industry. Organizers say participants will learn about the entire beef production process, explore career options, and build practical skills related to animal agriculture.
“This workshop is all about getting to try things for yourself,” said Jeff Gale, NDSU Extension agent in Foster County. “If you want to work with cattle and see how beef is raised, processed and prepared for the table, you’re going to enjoy this fun event.”
Sessions throughout the day will focus on topics such as animal health, nutrition, calving processes, and safe handling techniques. At the Livestock Unit of the research center, attendees will evaluate cattle body condition and collect hay samples as part of experiential activities. During lunch hour, participants will prepare their own meal while learning basic grilling techniques. The afternoon includes a tour of a local meat processor where youth can observe aspects of beef processing firsthand.
Registration costs $20 per participant and covers lunch as well as workshop materials. Advance registration is required so organizers can plan supplies and meals accordingly.
