North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS) and the North Dakota Department of Commerce are urging residents who need help heating their homes to apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This announcement comes as part of National Energy Assistance Day on February 2.
In the past year, LIHEAP provided $15.3 million in assistance, helping an average of 37,000 people across the state. During the winter months, more than 36,500 individuals receive monthly support from the program.
The program offers financial help for energy costs as well as weatherization services such as home insulation, weather stripping, furnace cleaning or repair, and chimney inspection. Both homeowners and renters are eligible to apply.
Starting in 2025, HHS introduced a year-round application process for regular LIHEAP benefits. Previously, applications were only accepted during specific periods each year.
“The year-round application helps prevent utility disconnections, reduces the need for emergency services and supports household health, employment continuity and the overall well-being of families,” said Joshua Haugen, HHS Economic Assistance LIHEAP Administrator.
Emergency assistance is also available throughout the year to address unexpected financial challenges. This support can be used for furnace replacements or repairs and to prevent service shutoffs or cover temporary heating or cooling devices. Officials encourage households not to wait until an emergency arises before applying.
To further promote awareness about energy-related resources, the Office of Community Development and Rural Prosperity at Commerce will host Community Services Virtual Office Hours on March 10 at 1 p.m. CT. The free session will focus on weatherization programs and energy assistance options like LIHEAP. Participants can connect with staff members to ask questions and learn how these programs can lower energy costs and improve home efficiency. Registration information is available at officehoursweatherization.eventbrite.com.
Applications for LIHEAP can be submitted online at hhs.nd.gov/applyforhelp, at local human service zone offices or by mail.
