The ideal candidate should be skilled in legal research and writing as well as effective communication both orally and in writing. Additional skills include organizing work priorities, drafting legislation or briefs, applying sound legal judgment based on precedent and rules of procedure, using legal research software such as Westlaw or LawDesk, presenting complex topics publicly before various audiences including legislative committees.

Work is primarily performed in an office environment but may require some travel that can be adjusted due to weather conditions. Physical requirements are generally light work involving sitting or standing for extended periods along with occasional lifting up to 20 pounds.
