The North Dakota Game and Fish Department recognized its volunteer instructors during the annual banquet in Bismarck on April 15.
These awards highlight the department’s commitment to community engagement through hunter education courses and wildlife outreach, aiming to foster conservation awareness, according to the official website. Bruce Baer of Belfield was named Hunter Education Instructor of the Year. The Hunter Education Team of the Year award went to Johnathan Bahm, Michael Bahm, Kevin Lech and Leah Vantilborg from Mandan, as well as Mike Hinrichs, Brock Larson and Earl Torgerson from Bismarck. Robert Ell Jr. of Wilton received the Volunteer of the Year award.
Several longtime volunteers were also honored for their years of service. Those recognized for 30 years included Lynn Baier (Fordville), Glen Fuhrman (Bismarck), Larry Leier (Hague), Larry Nagel (Shields), Darris Olson (Bowbells), Don Underwood (Grand Forks), Larry Viall (Epping) and Mark Volk (Bismarck). Volunteers with 25 years included Bruce Baer among others from across North Dakota. Eleven individuals were recognized for two decades of volunteering.
The department operates statewide to manage wildlife populations and habitats, focusing on protection and conservation efforts that facilitate public uses such as hunting, fishing, and boating according to information provided by the official website. It also collaborates with landowners through programs like Private Land Open To Sportsmen to enhance habitat protection and increase public access.
In addition to educational programs like hunter education, the agency provides licenses and permits for outdoor activities while specializing in wildlife conservation management according to its official website.
