North Dakota Parks and Recreation announced on May 1 the launch of a new online donation process for its tree program and a newly introduced bench program.

The department said the updated system is designed to make it easier for residents and visitors to honor loved ones or mark special occasions while contributing to North Dakota’s state parks. The new options allow supporters to create living tributes or commemorative spaces, helping enhance park landscapes and accessibility.

Cody Schulz, North Dakota Parks and Recreation director, said, “Our parks are built on the generosity of people who care deeply about these places. By simplifying the process and bringing it online, we’re making it more accessible to honor a loved one, celebrate a milestone, or give back in a way that will be enjoyed for years to come.”

The Donate a Tree & Shrub program continues as an option for those wishing to contribute native species that provide shade, wildlife habitat, and ecological benefits. Through the new system, donors can select their preferred park location or species—or let staff determine what fits best ecologically—and arrange recognition through certificates or plaques. Donations range from $325 to $375.

A new Donate a Bench program allows individuals to commemorate people or events with custom benches installed in scenic locations within state parks. Each bench includes installation and an engraved plaque recognizing the donor’s contribution. Benches are available at $2,500 for a ten-year placement term.

Additional contributions can be made at any state park office or through the reservation system or online store. The department also encourages volunteering opportunities such as trail maintenance, campground assistance, event support, and educational programs.

More information about donation options is available on the North Dakota Parks and Recreation website or by calling 701-328-5357.
