Valley City State University’s Prairie Waters Education and Research Center announced on Apr. 27 that it will host three summer camps in 2026 aimed at helping students learn about water ecosystems through hands-on activities.
The camps are designed to give students in grades five through twelve opportunities to interact with local aquatic environments while participating in educational and recreational experiences. Organizers say the programs offer a way for young people to explore science, nature, and environmental topics outside the classroom during the summer months.
The STEM Explorers: Water Research Institute camp will take place June 9–11 for students who have completed grades nine through twelve. Each day features a different focus, including water quality testing, collecting aquatic insects and mussels, and studying fish biology. There is no cost to attend this camp, and participants may receive up to $75 in mileage reimbursement.
Splashin’ Around at Prairie Waters is scheduled for July 20–22 for children entering fifth or sixth grade. Activities include wading in streams, investigating stream health with water testing, identifying aquatic life during a water hunt, and other outdoor events. The registration fee is $95 per student; financial assistance is available by contacting Ellen Fehr at prairie.waters@vcsu.edu.
Fishin’ Around the Prairie Waters will be held July 27–29 for those entering seventh or eighth grade. Campers will explore fish habitats, canoe on the Sheyenne River, try boat fishing as well as alternative fishing methods without rods, and enjoy additional outdoor activities. This camp also costs $95 per participant with lunch, snacks, transportation from VCSU campus included; financial aid can be requested via Ellen Fehr.
Registration for all three camps is now open online at vcsu.news/prairiewaters.
