The United States Senate has confirmed Doug Burgum, former Governor of North Dakota, as the Secretary of the Interior. The confirmation came through with a vote tally of 79 to 18.

U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer from North Dakota expressed his support for Burgum’s nomination, stating: “Doug Burgum is tailor-made for the Secretary of the Interior.” He further elaborated on North Dakota’s embodiment of Teddy Roosevelt’s doctrine for public lands, highlighting Burgum’s leadership in balancing energy development, ranching, conservation, and recreation.

Earlier this month, during Burgum’s confirmation hearing before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Senator Cramer introduced him by emphasizing his credentials beyond being associated with oil and gas. Cramer remarked that Burgum is primarily a conservationist.

On the Senate floor prior to the hearing, Cramer spoke about Burgum’s alignment with “the Theodore Roosevelt spirit” cherished in North Dakota. He underscored Burgum’s understanding of balancing energy development with stewardship and his commitment to these values as he takes on his new role.

Burgum’s nomination received bipartisan support in committee proceedings, passing with an 18 to 2 vote. Highlighting his connections with tribal leaders in North Dakota, Senator Cramer read a letter from Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Chairwoman Janet Alkire. In her letter, Alkire commended Burgum: “He understands the importance of honoring traditional values and culture.”
