BISMARCK – U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) joined Larry Kudlow on Fox Business to discuss the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States’ (CFIUS) proposal to expand its jurisdiction over Grand Forks Air Force Base. Excerpts and full video are below.
On CFIUS Proposal to Designate Grand Forks Air Force Base ‘Highly Sensitive:’
“[The Grand Forks Air Force Base] and a number of other bases have now been placed on the 'highly sensitive' list, which means for a 100-mile radius around those bases, CFIUS has direct jurisdiction. That's an important step in helping us fend off bad investment. We still have plenty more to do, there's a lot of legislation out there, but this was a good and important step.”
On the Community’s Impact on Fufeng Project Cancelation:
“It was the people who put the City Commission on the line, the City Council, and pushed them hard. The Council wanted to keep the project, but then they wanted more direction from the federal government, who has the means and the expertise to make these decisions. The federal government was very slow to respond, and that was irritating. […] The tragic part of it was we went for nearly a year-and-a-half debating the issue when we should have pulled the plug right away.”
On Protecting U.S. Critical Supply Chains:
“During the pandemic, we learned firsthand how susceptible and vulnerable our critical supply chains are to the Chinese Communist Party, including food. China owns the one of the largest, if not the largest, meatpacking facility in the United States. They're always looking to buy more critical infrastructure, more critical supply chains. […] We need to wean ourselves from that. China has taken full advantage of our open, free market capitalist system, but they've never adopted it.”
