WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) questioned General Glen VanHerck, Commander, United States Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command, and Vice Admiral Jon Hill, Director, Missile Defense Agency, about the need for better ground-based radar capabilities, including Perimeter Acquisition Radar Attack Characterization System (PARCS) modernization at the Cavalier Space Force Station.
“What role does ground-based radar play?” asked Senator Cramer. “What do you see as the future for PARCS?”
“I believe the PARCS radar is owned and operated by the Space Force. We did, and continue to, assess the utility of it based on where our threat regions are and our focus for our sensor architecture.” responded Vice Admiral Hill.
General VanHerck added, PARCS is “crucial for missile warning today.”
Background:
Senator Cramer has worked to drive the conversation about PARCS modernization. In the most recent National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), he secured $3 million for PARCS efforts at Cavalier and included a provision directing the Secretary of the Air Force to issue a report on its value. Since, the Senator has questioned witnesses for status updates at two other Strategic Forces subcommittee hearings, one on March 15 and another on May 3.
