Senator John Hoeven has outlined efforts to counter the Biden administration's regulations on U.S. energy production, emphasizing a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution aimed at blocking the implementation of what he terms the "Natural Gas Tax." This tax was part of a bill passed by Democrats in 2022. The Senate commenced voting on Hoeven's resolution, with final passage anticipated soon.
Hoeven also voted to uphold the national energy emergency declared by former President Trump, which is intended to facilitate the development of U.S. energy resources and infrastructure. The emergency status was maintained with a Senate vote of 52 to 47.
"We’re working with President Trump to unleash America’s full energy potential and truly make our nation energy dominant," Hoeven stated. He stressed that energy security equates to national security and is crucial for the country. Hoeven highlighted efforts in the Senate to confirm Trump's cabinet officials swiftly, ensuring department heads are positioned as they work towards increasing U.S. energy production from coal, oil, and gas reserves.
Hoeven criticized what he described as a natural gas tax rule by Democrats, arguing it imposes an additional five percent or more tax on natural gas. "Everybody uses natural gas to heat their homes, cook their meals and for many other purposes as well," he said. According to Hoeven, this tax disproportionately affects low-income individuals and small oil and gas producers in states like North Dakota and Montana.
He advocates for supporting innovation and technology development that reduces emissions while increasing natural gas production rather than imposing new taxes that might hinder production.
Hoeven mentioned collaboration with the Trump administration to replace Biden-era rules restricting access to taxpayer-owned energy resources. He argued this approach would empower producers, increase supply, reduce prices for consumers, lower inflation, grow the economy, create jobs, enhance national security, and support allies.
