Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak (R-ND) has announced a new initiative by the AI and Energy Working Group to address the energy demands of artificial intelligence (AI). The group is issuing a Request for Information (RFI) to gather input from stakeholders on how to ensure reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy access.
"To be AI dominant, we must first be energy dominant. In 2024, data centers accounted for 4.3% of total U.S. power demand, and analysts predict this could climb to as much as 12% by 2030—more electricity than the entire state of Texas uses today. Yet, the U.S. isn't scaling up reliable baseload power quickly enough to support this rapid growth,” Fedorchak stated. She emphasized her goal to collaborate with experts and stakeholders to develop a legislative framework that secures energy dominance and strengthens America's electric grid.
The RFI focuses on three main areas: American Energy Dominance and AI Energy Demands, Securing the Energy Grid, and Strategic Competition: Outpacing China. These areas aim to ensure a sustainable domestic energy supply for AI infrastructure, modernize the grid against increased demand and threats, and maintain American leadership in global competition.
Stakeholders are invited to submit written responses by May 15, 2025. The insights gathered will help shape legislative recommendations for strengthening America’s energy infrastructure while maintaining leadership in AI development.
