North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS) is emphasizing the importance of poison prevention during National Poison Prevention Week, observed from March 16 to 22. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the dangers of poisonous substances, safety measures, and available resources for assistance in case of poisoning incidents.
Residents of North Dakota can access valuable information and support by calling the poison help line at 800-222-1222. In 2024, the North Dakota Poison Help Center received over 5,600 calls from residents. A significant number of these inquiries were related to medications such as pain relievers, antidepressants, and sedatives.
The poison help line connects callers with medically trained specialists who offer accurate information about poisons and treatments, expert guidance on appropriate actions, and confidential assistance without judgment. For severe cases involving collapse, seizures, breathing difficulties, or unconsciousness, individuals are advised to call 911 immediately.
Statistics indicate that approximately 90% of poisonings occur at home each year. Over 70% of those who contact the poison help line receive necessary assistance without needing a visit to a healthcare facility or hospital.
The service is free, available around the clock throughout the year. HHS encourages residents to save the poison help center's number (800-222-1222) in their phone contacts and bookmark ndpoison.org for easy access.
