The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) employs patient advocates at medical centers across the nation to manage feedback from veterans and their families. These advocates work with VA staff to resolve issues on behalf of veterans.

U.S. Senators Kevin Cramer and Jacky Rosen have introduced the Strengthening VA Patient Advocacy for Rural Veterans Act of 2025. This legislation aims to enhance the VA’s patient advocate program to better support rural veterans who receive care outside medical centers. The act proposes that facilities appoint a patient advocate as a coordinator for veterans in rural and highly rural areas, aiming to improve access and experience for these veterans. It also includes provisions for reporting to increase accountability and Congressional awareness of the challenges faced by veterans seeking care.

Senator Cramer stated, “Patient advocates really play an important role in helping our veterans navigate the incredible VA red tape, it's just outlandish as it is with most bureaucracies.” He added that the bill acknowledges "the unique challenges that are faced by particularly rural veterans" and provides targeted support through dedicated patient advocates.

Senator Rosen highlighted that many Nevada veterans face barriers in accessing VA medical care, noting, “Our bipartisan legislation would help improve access to care and resources by establishing VA patient advocates specifically for rural veterans.”

The bill has received support from several organizations, including Disabled American Veterans (DAV), the American Legion (TAL), and America’s Warrior Partnership (AWP). DAV expressed gratitude towards Senator Cramer, stating that this legislation will "improve the VA’s Office of Patient Advocacy" by ensuring coordinated care through designated patient advocates for those in rural areas.
