Phase two of the Williston U.S. Highway 2 improvement project is set to commence on Wednesday, May 7. The project, focused on long-term infrastructure development, targets the Williston Square area and surrounding corridors.
Before phase two begins, final work for phase one is scheduled for Monday, May 5, and Tuesday, May 6. On Monday, median removals along Highway 2 will take place during the day, with existing city traffic signal lights turned off and removed at night. Tuesday will see the installation and activation of temporary traffic signals, which will operate like a four-way stop and permit continued left turns. Flaggers will be present to assist with traffic flow during this time.
The launch of phase two will involve new traffic control measures. Traffic is set to run head-to-head on the existing eastbound and northbound lanes while the westbound and southbound lanes are closed for construction. Following this traffic shift, crossover and asphalt work will proceed, and frontage road and Highway 2 lane removals will commence, with major removal operations also underway.
Demolition of structures on the newly acquired right-of-way, initially planned in March, is also set to begin soon. The project's full impact on the roadways and reconstruction activities is expected to continue throughout the 2025 construction season.
Updates on the project will be regularly available on the project website and the North Dakota Department of Transportation and City of Williston social media channels. Officials remind motorists to stay vigilant, adhere to posted signs, and be mindful of workers within the construction zone.
