The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) is set to begin mowing along the shoulders of state highways from mid-June to July 1, contingent on grass height. The mowing will cover a clearance of seven to ten feet.
In some cases, additional mowing may occur earlier at highway intersections and in urban areas. Landowners adjacent to non-interstate ditches are encouraged to mow for hay before the state begins its operations. It is important to note that private mowing is prohibited in medians of four-lane highways.
According to North Dakota state law, hay bales must be stored on the outer edge of the right of way. Large round bales should not be placed on inslopes or within 60 feet of the roadway. All hay stored on the right of way must be removed by November 1 as per legal requirements.
