The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) has launched North Dakota Mobile ID, a new service that allows residents to add their driver’s license or state identification card to digital wallets on mobile devices. With this feature, users can present their IDs using Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or Samsung Wallet at more than 250 TSA airports nationwide and in select businesses and apps.
According to NDDOT Director Ron Henke, “We’re excited to offer North Dakota residents this new and convenient option to securely present their driver’s licenses and state IDs using their devices. This technology will allow users to quickly display their ID and have transparency over the personal information they share.”
The department clarified that the Mobile ID is an optional addition and does not replace physical licenses or identification cards. Residents are still required to carry physical licenses while driving, and when presenting an ID in person, users retain possession of their device.
Henke added, “The NDDOT will continually work with businesses that frequently use driver’s licenses and identification cards to familiarize them with North Dakota Mobile IDs and their uses. We expect acceptance to grow as North Dakota Mobile IDs become more popular across the state.”
Residents opting for a mobile driver’s license must pay a $5 fee per renewal cycle of the physical license. The fee is non-refundable once the mobile driver’s license is successfully provisioned. Those who have not prepaid will be directed to a state website for payment after the request for a mobile license is reviewed.
