First- to third-grade teachers in North Dakota can now apply for worm soil conservation kits, an initiative from the North Dakota Department of Agriculture and the North Dakota Ag in the Classroom Program. The program aims to help students learn about the role of worms in soil health and plant growth.

“I encourage educators to take advantage of this opportunity to embed agriculture into their classrooms,” said Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring. “Teachers and students will get insight into the world of worms and learn about the vital role they play in keeping soil healthy.”

Each kit contains lesson plans from the National Ag in the Classroom Matrix, a worm farm kit, and a related book. The materials are designed for young students and focus on the importance of soil health. Teachers must use the kits and lesson plans by April 1, 2026, after which follow-up surveys will be distributed in late April 2026.

Kits are available in limited quantities on a first-come, first-served basis, with one kit per classroom. Applications close on November 14, 2025, and can be submitted at https://www.ndda.nd.gov/AITCresources.

For more information about the application process, educators can contact Heather Lang, Agriculture Business Development Coordinator, by email at hlang@nd.gov or by phone at 701-328-2308 or 701-595-9120.
