The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) has opened the application period for its Transportation Alternatives (TA) program, targeting projects scheduled for federal fiscal year 2028.
The TA program offers financial support for a range of transportation-related projects. These include initiatives focused on pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, safe routes to school, safe routes for non-drivers, and the repurposing of abandoned railroad corridors for non-motorized use. Additional eligible projects involve the construction of turnouts, overlooks, and viewing areas along roadways. Community improvement activities are also supported, such as the preservation and rehabilitation of historic transportation facilities, vegetation management in transportation rights of way, archaeological activities related to transportation projects, streetscape enhancements, and corridor landscaping. Environmental mitigation projects are also considered.
Eligibility for the program extends to city and county governments, transit agencies, natural resource or public land agencies, school districts, local education agencies, tribal governments, and other local or regional governmental entities that oversee transportation or recreational trails.
Project funding will be based on the cost estimate provided in each application. Only the contract construction costs are eligible for funding. Costs not covered include preliminary and construction engineering, environmental impact mitigation, right-of-way acquisition, utilities, and construction items deemed ineligible for federal aid.
Applications must be submitted to NDDOT by December 31, 2025.
