Today, the University of North Dakota (UND) and the Space Development Agency (SDA) have formalized an Educational Partnership Agreement (EPA). This agreement underscores the significant role UND and Grand Forks play in advancing space development and national security.

During a visit to Grand Forks with U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer, SDA Director Dr. Derek Tournear announced the forthcoming partnership. Senator Cramer, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Airland Subcommittee, has supported this collaboration to enhance educational and workforce opportunities at UND.

Senator Cramer remarked on the partnership: “This collaboration between the University of North Dakota and the Space Development Agency is a testament to the transformational capabilities Grand Forks has to offer,” he said. “The long-term partnership will make a huge difference, not just for the university but for the security of the world. This is another opportunity for UND to demonstrate its leadership in bolstering our nation’s space capabilities, and I look forward to working with them to see Grand Forks grow and thrive.”

Dr. Tournear also expressed optimism about the agreement: “The Space Development Agency looks forward to a deeper partnership with the University of North Dakota through the newly-signed Educational Partnership Agreement,” he stated. “The agreement encourages the free flow of ideas and facilitates exchange of personnel between SDA and UND, which will benefit both organizations. The future of national security in, from, and to space is strengthened by partnerships like this one.”

The EPA aims to provide educational opportunities for students at UND by enhancing science, mathematics, and engineering courses. It allows SDA to loan defense laboratory equipment as well as surplus computers and equipment to UND. Additionally, SDA personnel may assist in teaching or developing science courses.

The agreement also includes sabbatical opportunities for faculty members, internships for students, involvement in SDA projects that could earn academic credit for participants, as well as academic and career advice from SDA staff.

In April, Dr. Tournear visited UND along with General Michael Guetlein from U.S. Space Force Vice Chief of Operations; they were accompanied by Senator Cramer during their tour of John D. Odegard School Of Aerospace Sciences at College Engineering & Mines along with stops at Grand Forks Air Force Base Cavalier Station where ongoing activities were observed regarding U.S.’ defense capabilities within state lines.
