Valley City State University will host its 134th Commencement Exercises on May 16, celebrating the largest spring graduating class in the school’s history. The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.

The event will recognize more than 230 students who completed their degrees during the spring semester and over 350 students who finished their studies throughout the past year. Approximately 180 graduates are expected to attend the ceremony in person, which will also be live-streamed on VCSU’s YouTube Channel.

Interim President Allen Burgad will preside over the commencement exercises, while Michelle Kommer is set to represent the State Board of Higher Education. Graduating senior Tara Dahl has been selected to deliver the undergraduate reflection, and Lindsey Kiecker, an associate professor of science, will present the faculty reflection.

Select seniors will also be honored at a Senior Awards Ceremony on May 15. During this event, honor cords and departmental awards will be presented to qualifying graduates.

Dahl is graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education after completing her requirements in December and beginning work as a music teacher in Montana. She credits VCSU for providing practical teaching experiences that shaped her career path. Kiecker joined VCSU’s faculty in 2023 and teaches various chemistry courses; she recently received both faculty- and student-selected teaching awards.
