The North Dakota Department of Transportation and the North Dakota Highway Patrol announced on Apr. 4 that westbound Interstate 94 between Jamestown and Steele is closed because of blowing snow and zero visibility. The area is currently under a No Travel Advisory.

This closure affects travel in the south central part of the state, where conditions have been described as life-threatening. Authorities said that travel on a closed road is prohibited and extremely dangerous, urging motorists to avoid these areas until further notice.

Several counties in the region are also experiencing hazardous conditions, with some roads potentially becoming blocked or impassable. Many other areas remain under Travel Alerts, increasing concern for driver safety across much of North Dakota.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation manages eight district offices across the state for roadway maintenance, construction oversight, and administrative services, according to the official website. The agency operates under executive leadership including a director and deputy directors who oversee engineering, administration, planning, and driver services per the official website. It provides essential services such as vehicle registration, driver licensing, upkeep of more than 8,500 miles of roadways and 4,900 bridges according to its official website.

For updates on road closures or weather conditions throughout North Dakota’s transportation network—which is managed by this state agency responsible for development and operation—drivers are encouraged to use resources like the ND Roads app or call 511 as noted by information from their official website.
