NDHRC stands in support of reproductive rights and are deeply disappointed by the Dobbs vs. Jackson decision made by the SCOTUS on Friday, June 22.
What we know:
The Supreme Court has decided to overturn Roe vs. Wade. This means that it is not longer a federal constitutional right to have an abortion. Now, it will be up to each individual state to create abortion laws. North Dakota is one of thirteen states with a “trigger ban” in place, meaning abortion will be prohibited immediately 30 days after the decision. There are about 20 states, including Minnesota, where abortion is likely to remain legal and protected. Washington post provides with this predictions map.
What to do:
Your feelings in this moment are valid, whatever they may be. To avoid panicking and becoming fixated on bad news (and misinformation) it is important to take a break from “doom scrolling.” Abortion will be less accessible for many people, particularly communities that are victims of systemic injustices, such as low income and BIPOC. But— this does not mean that it is impossible to receive abortion care. “Abortion pills are safe, effective and approved by the FDA to end first trimester pregnancy at home in all 50 states,” according to mayday.health.
