Hunkpapa/Hidatsa hide tanning master D Joyce Kitson & Sioux apprentice Leslie White Dress received a FY23 Folk & Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program grant to teach/learn traditional Siouan buffalo hide tanning. Uses include: throws, robes, rugs, coats, and Winter Count—a series of pictographs drawn on buffalo hide, cloth, or paper that was used to help remember community history.

With a NEW YEAR beginning, NDCA will soon be accepting new apprenticeship applications. If you are interested in learning more, visit https://www.arts.nd.gov/  or email Troyd Geist: tgeist@nd.gov.
