While emerald ash borer has not been detected in North Dakota, it is important to monitor your ash trees and look for signs of the invasive insect. One of the most apparent indicators of EAB is what we refer to as “blonding”. The larvae of EAB eat the inner bark of ash trees, destroying the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients from its roots to its leaves. Woodpeckers sense these larvae in the tree and fleck the bark off looking for them. You'll see piles of wood bark on the ground at the base of the tree too.

If you suspect your ash tree has EAB, report it here: https://www.ndda.nd.gov/reab
