Senator John Hoeven announced that the U.S. Department of Energy has awarded over $48.6 million to support Project Tundra, a carbon capture, utilization, and storage initiative led by Minnkota Power Cooperative. The funding is designated for the DCC East Project in Grand Forks.

“North Dakota has always been a leader in energy innovation and now with Project Tundra, we’re leading the technology development of carbon capture and storage on a traditional coal-fired power plant,” said Hoeven. “Project Tundra is vital to the future of our lignite industry, and will help ensure we have the reliability and affordability of coal-fired electric power today and for future generations.”

Hoeven has been working to advance Project Tundra as a solution for the state's coal-fired electric industry. Last year, Minnkota and Hoeven announced that Project Tundra had entered its final stage of development with new affiliates such as TC Energy, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Kiewit joining to build the project.
