Senators John Hoeven, Kevin Cramer, and Congressman Kelly Armstrong have announced a $55 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the expansion of US Highway 85 in western North Dakota. Known as the Theodore Roosevelt Expressway, this project aims to widen over 13 miles of the road in McKenzie County from two lanes to four lanes. The improvements will also include widening shoulders and reducing roadway curves between Watford City and I-94.

The funding was secured under the Multimodal Project Discretionary Grant program. This competitive program awarded $1 for every $10 in applications received by DOT during this application window. The delegation previously highlighted the project's benefits in terms of transportation efficiency and safety to DOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

“The Theodore Roosevelt Expressway is the primary north-south roadway in western North Dakota, serving as a vital corridor to help connect our region’s energy and agricultural sectors to other parts of the country,” stated Senator Hoeven. He emphasized that expanding US 85 will reduce traffic delays, improve safety, and support economic growth.

Senator Cramer added, “As Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure, I am especially pleased to see funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act come to the Theodore Roosevelt Expressway.” He noted that widening the expressway is crucial for safety and efficient goods transportation through the region.
