If you were born after 1961 and are at least 12 years old, North Dakota requires you to complete a certified hunter education course before obtaining a firearm or bowhunting license. There are two types of courses available: home study (or hybrid) and traditional classroom.

The home study course involves 7-10 hours of online learning and six hours of in-person classroom time. The classroom component includes an initial session before the online class begins and a concluding session for testing.

Traditional classroom courses require at least 14 hours of in-person instruction, typically offered from January through May.

To enroll in a hunter education class for 2025, visit the North Dakota Game and Fish Department website at gf.nd.gov. Click on the education link, then "enroll" next to your chosen class, and follow the instructions provided. Registration requires personal information. Classes can be sorted by city or start date and will be updated throughout the year as new classes are finalized.
