Each week, nearly 47 million Americans rely on AM radio for news, sports, weather updates, and emergency alerts. Despite its widespread use, some car manufacturers have proposed removing AM radio from their newer vehicle models.
In response to this development, U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) has joined forces with Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Ed Markey (D-MA) to introduce the bipartisan AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act. This legislation aims to ensure that broadcast AM radio remains accessible in all passenger vehicles, including electric ones.
If passed, the bill would require the Department of Transportation (DOT) to issue a rule mandating that new vehicles maintain access to broadcast AM radio at no extra cost to consumers. It also provides small vehicle manufacturers with at least four years after the rule's issuance date by DOT to comply. Additionally, automakers would need to inform consumers if their vehicles do not have access to broadcast AM radio before the rule takes effect.
Senator Cramer emphasized the importance of AM radio as a reliable source of information: “AM radio connects millions of listeners across the country to reliable news, critical emergency alerts, and vital weather updates every week.” He further stated his commitment to keeping Americans safe by preventing automakers from removing this essential communication tool from vehicles.
Senator Cruz highlighted AM radio's role during emergencies: “During weather disasters or power outages, AM radio is consistently the most reliable form of communication and is critical to keep millions of Texans safe.” He expressed pride in partnering with Senator Markey on this legislation.
Senator Markey noted the significance of broadcast AM radio amid climate change-induced disasters: “As we witness more tragic climate change-induced disasters like the wildfires in Los Angeles, broadcast AM radio continues to be a critical tool for communication.”
The legislation has garnered additional support from numerous senators across party lines.
