The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is offering free seed for the 2025 growing season to landowners interested in planting wildlife food plots for pheasants. The department's initiative aims to enhance plant diversity with a seed mix that includes flowering plants from spring through fall. This mix attracts insects, which are a primary diet component for pheasant chicks, and provides cover during spring and summer as well as a winter food source. Other wildlife species will also benefit from this diverse mix.
Most of the department’s food plots are part of its Private Land Open To Sportsmen program. However, this particular campaign does not require a PLOTS contract. Landowners participating in the program are encouraged to allow reasonable public access, which could include granting permission to hunters occasionally, putting up “Ask Before You Enter” signs, or refraining from posting the surrounding land. Importantly, participating landowners cannot charge fees for hunting.
The department will supply enough seed to cover up to five acres at no cost to the landowner.
