North Dakota recognizes April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, participating in national efforts to raise awareness about child safety and family support. The North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS) along with Families Flourish ND and various local agencies aim to emphasize community efforts in preventing child abuse and neglect.

In 2024, the state saw a decrease in confirmed child abuse and neglect cases, with 467 instances recorded, down from 580 in 2023. HHS Children and Family Services Director Cory Pedersen expressed that this year's theme, "Powered by Hope, Strengthened by Prevention," embodies the vision of offering families the necessary support to foster a brighter future for children. Pedersen highlighted that HHS is committed to helping families access resources to ensure children's safety and well-being, noting several milestones achieved in improving child protection services with partners.

Events throughout April, both in-person and virtual, will take place statewide to honor Child Abuse Prevention Month. Families Flourish ND provides details on scheduled events.

Additionally, April serves as a reminder that North Dakota law permits parents to use designated Baby Safe Haven sites. This provision allows a parent to leave an unharmed baby, up to one year old, at hospitals or other approved locations without facing prosecution, provided they hand the baby to on-duty staff.
