Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak recently visited Minot Air Force Base, a key site in the United States' nuclear defense strategy. During her visit, she toured essential infrastructure and engaged with airmen and security personnel who manage critical assets.
“This visit was a chance to hear directly from those serving at one of the most strategically important bases in the country. Their motto, ‘Only the Best Come North,’ accurately reflects what we have here in Minot,” Fedorchak stated. She expressed gratitude towards Cols. Lamarand and Schlabach for their hospitality.
At the 5th Bomb Wing headquarters, Congresswoman Fedorchak received a briefing from Col. Jesse Lamarand and Col. James Schlabach on maintaining America’s aerial safety through strategic deterrence efforts. The 5th Bomb Wing operates B-52 Stratofortress bombers, integral to long-range strike capabilities, while the 91st Missile Wing manages over 150 Minuteman III ICBMs across an extensive missile complex.
Discussions included challenges such as maintaining Cold War-era facilities and upgrading technologies to support future capabilities like the Sentinel program for ICBM fleet modernization.
Fedorchak also examined base infrastructure issues related to aging facilities and discussed supporting airmen managing the largest active nuclear stockpile by reducing bureaucratic obstacles affecting healthcare access.
During her tour, she viewed a B-52 Bomber up close and visited a Minuteman III ICBM silo, gaining insight into its underground operations and security measures that ensure constant readiness against threats.
Additionally, she learned about “Operation Home for the Holidays,” which assists airmen with travel costs during festive seasons.
Julie concluded her visit by congratulating Minot for being named one of the 2025 Great Defense Communities and commemorating Minot Air Force Base's 70th groundbreaking anniversary in her column for the Minot Daily News.
