Zebra mussels have been found in Smishek Lake, located in Burke County, North Dakota. The North Dakota Game and Fish Department confirmed the discovery after routine plankton tow net samples detected zebra mussel veligers. Ben Holen, aquatic nuisance species coordinator for the department, stated that follow-up sampling led to the identification of additional adult mussels in the lake.

Smishek Lake covers 195 acres and is situated approximately 4.8 miles north of Powers Lake. It is a well-known spot for recreational activities.

Following this discovery, Smishek Lake has been classified as a Class I Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) infested water. Emergency rules are now in effect to stop the movement of water from the lake, including water used for bait transfer. Signs will be posted at access points around the lake to inform visitors of these new restrictions.

Ben Holen said, "With input from partners, the Game and Fish Department is currently evaluating containment and treatment options on Smishek Lake to minimize the spread of zebra mussels in the region."

The department is working with other organizations to assess ways to control and treat the infestation to prevent further spread within the area.
