***2023 FIRE SCHOOL CLASS SPOTLIGHT***

Wildland Fire Weather Instructor - Chauncy Schultz

Length - 4 hours Offered times

 -Saturday, Feb 25th at 8 AM and                         

Sunday, Feb 26th at 8 AM

Class Description - Students in this class will learn how weather impacts wildland fires, and how to obtain and use weather information for the successful planning, tactical, and safety operations. The class will focus on wildland fire weather scenarios typical of North Dakota and will use an interactive, discussion-based approach to make connections between weather and firefighting operations. Students will learn how changes in weather affect the rate and direction of wildfire spread, how to safely and successfully adjust operations during frontal passages, and how instability plays a role in fire behavior. Students will also learn how to obtain and interpret fire weather planning forecasts, incident-specific spot weather forecasts, and when and how Red Flag Warnings are issued.            * This class is also available to attend virtually

Instructor Bio Chauncey Shultz - Chauncy is the Science and Operations Officer for the National Weather Service in Bismarck. In this role, he leads the office's training, research, and operational forecast programs. Chauncy has been with the National Weather Service since 2009, including previous stops in Nebraska and Montana, where he was part of the Incident Meteorologist program. He's been a firefighter with the New Salem Fire Department for many years and has been serving as an officer with the department since 2022.
