The U.S. Department of Transportation has allocated $12.1 million to the North Dakota Department of Transportation for two significant bridge projects. The funding, provided through the Bridge Investment Program, will support infrastructure improvements in Morton and Sioux counties.

A total of $9.4 million is designated for the Safe and Resilient Passages at Standing Rock Project. This initiative involves replacing two bridges on North Dakota Highway 1806: the Backwater Bridge over Canta Peta Creek and the Cannonball River Bridge. The project is a collaborative effort with local communities and stakeholders from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.

Additionally, $2.7 million will fund the Viking Bridge Reconstruction Project. Although currently in fair condition, the Viking Bridge is projected to deteriorate within three years without intervention. The reconstruction aims to meet modern standards by widening sidewalks, expanding travel areas, and incorporating a non-mountable traffic barrier. Measures to prevent scouring and improve resilience against flooding are also included in the design.

"Bridges are critical for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods across North Dakota and beyond," stated U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer, Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure. "These projects will enhance safety, support local growth, and ensure reliable infrastructure for years to come."

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law established the Bridge Investment Program to fund bridge replacement, rehabilitation, preservation, and protection projects nationwide. North Dakota's congressional delegation has actively supported these initiatives through letters advocating for various bridge projects in the state.
