May 4-10 marks Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) Awareness Week in North Dakota. The initiative aims to enhance public understanding of the preventive measures necessary to prevent the introduction and spread of ANS in the state's waterways.

Aquatic Nuisance Species are nonnative plants, animals, or pathogens that can impact the ecology of lakes and rivers, as well as their economic and recreational value.

Ben Holen, ANS coordinator for the state Game and Fish Department, emphasized that ANS awareness week involves both state and federal agencies highlighting ongoing efforts within North Dakota. "The pathways of ANS introductions are vast, so it is important to relay ANS awareness across diverse platforms to reach many unique water users," he stated. "Raising awareness is a collaborative approach among partners and conscientious citizens."
