Ward County investigates fatal crash involving two vehicles

On Thursday, June 5, a fatal crash occurred one mile west of Douglas at the intersection of 156th Street SW and 359th Ave SW. The incident involved a John Deere side by side and a Kenworth truck. The road conditions were reported as good, while the weather was cloudy.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP), Ward County Sheriff’s Office, Max Fire Department, Douglas Fire Department, Garrison Ambulance, McLean County Sheriff’s Office, and Makoti Ambulance responded to the scene.

According to the NDHP narrative, at approximately 8:39 AM, both vehicles were traveling west on 359th Ave SW. The Kenworth truck attempted to pass the John Deere side by side when the latter made a left turn in front of it. This resulted in the Kenworth striking the side by side and both vehicles coming to rest in different positions; the side by side ended up in the north ditch while the cement truck tipped onto its driver side and blocked both lanes of traffic.

The driver of the John Deere side by side, an 80-year-old male from Douglas who was not using a seatbelt, sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the Kenworth truck, a 68-year-old male from Minot who was wearing a seatbelt, was injured and transported to Trinity Health in Minot.

The investigation into this crash is ongoing with charges still under consideration.
