Motorists in North Dakota are being urged to be alert for deer along roadways as juvenile deer begin to move away from their home areas. According to the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, the months from October through early December mark the highest risk period for deer-vehicle collisions.

Drivers are encouraged to reduce speed and use caution after dark, when deer are most active. The department notes that most accidents occur at dawn and dusk, coinciding with increased deer movement.

Officials advise motorists that if one deer crosses the road, others may follow closely behind. Extra attention should be given in areas marked with Deer Crossing Area signs.

In cases where a collision occurs but only vehicle damage results, drivers do not need to contact law enforcement. However, any accident involving personal injury or property damage beyond the vehicle must be reported.
